ABOUT THE SPIVEYS
Larry is an ordained pastor and works with his wife, Sharon, in couple to couple counseling. He is a Board Certified Biblical Counselor (BCBC) and a Board Certified Master Life Coach (BCMLC) through the American Association of Christian Counselors.
Larry and Sharon have been married 42 years and have provided couple counseling, marriage enrichment seminars and retreats for hundreds of couples both in ministry and in private practice. They developed and coordinated a Premarital Mentoring Program using lay couples in their home church, serving over 200 couples in 8 years, and have helped several other local churches establish mentoring programs as well.
Larry consults with local individual pastors on issues dealing with staff and parishioners to help them grow their church and often provides training for church staff members. He is an approved trainer to Life Innovations, Inc. for their Prepare/Enrich Program used in many churches. He is also qualified in administering and interpreting Meyers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) which he has used in team building for local businesses, agencies and churches for over 20 years.
Most of Larry’s counseling is in conjunction with Sharon with couples. They have found the team approach to be very successful in helping couples build strong God centered marriages. He also counsels with men of all ages on men’s issues and how to lead the family as God instructs them to do. He does a lot of work with men and women around career/work issues as well, using the MBTI.
Larry has been a professional drummer most of his adult life and is proficient in use and design of sound systems for large or small venues. In his early adult life, he was a convention coordinator and director for large seminars/conventions. He has used those skills in working with churches as well.
Sharon is a South Carolina licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW) and is also a Board Certified Professional Christian Counselor (BCPCC) by the American Association of Christian Counselors. She has 38 years experience in counseling through service with the SC and Greenville Mental Health system, in clinical as well as management positions, and more recently in private practice with her husband, Larry.
She received her Masters degree in Social Work from Florida State University and is a member of the National Association of Social Work and the Academy of Social Work. She has extensive experience with crisis management/counseling and one of her specialties is work with adult victims of child sex abuse and other traumas. She also works effectively with anxiety, and panic disorders, as well as depression, grief, and other life stressors. She counsels women of all ages on women issues and family roles.
Her primary specialty is couples counseling which she does with Larry, couple to couple, using personality profiles in God’s design for the family. They use the MBTI to teach couples effective communication and problem-solving techniques based on personality types. They also enjoy working with family units to enhance communication and problem-solving skills.
Faith is very important to Sharon and she has built her private practice work with a Christian emphasis. She and Larry have been through level IV training at Christian Healing Ministries by Judith and Francis McNutt in Healing Prayer. Both serve as Prayer Ministers at their church in a weekly Healing Prayer service. Spiritual history is a part of assessment and treatment planning, and prayer is routinely incorporated, with clients’ permission.
Hours of service are Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and Tuesdays 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.
